Bridle the Mouth

James 1:26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless.

Every one of us has experienced hurt, lies, and rejection. We know what it feels like to have hurtful and damaging things said toward us and about us. These lies and hurts can shape our thought life and become our identity if undealt with. We start believing these lies, and then we start talking them, and eventually, we experience the very things we have been saying about ourselves.

It is vital for the Born Again believer to renew their mind to who they are in Christ and know what God has said about them.

In James Chapter 1, he refers to the importance of controlling the mouth because a mouth that repeats negativity, lies, and hurt becomes a deceived heart.

A deceived heart is the result of saying things that we don't believe. When we say things like, "I always fail", "I always mess up", or "I'll never break this habit." "I'll never amount to anything."

When we speak those kinds of words, we will experience that very thing. Jesus said in Mark 11:23, "For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says."

Jesus said, "We will have what we say."

That is why what James says about controlling our tongue is one of the keys to walking in victory! It tends to be easier to say negative things because we live in a fallen, negative world. But we have the help of the Holy Spirit and the written Word of God to change the way we talk!

Instead of agreeing with what has been spoken over us and what we have heard all of our lives, let's agree with what God says about us!

God says that we are:

  • We have been made the righteousness of God in Christ! (2 Corinthians 5:21)

  • We are blameless and holy in His sight! (Colossians 1:22)

  • The favour of God is on my life and things work out for my good because I love God and I am called according to His purpose! (Psalms 5:12, Romans 8:28)

  • I have been redeemed from the curse of the law, and the blessing of Abraham is working in my life! (Galatians 3:13)

  • I am a blessing everywhere I go (Gen. 12:2)

  • My steps are ordered of the Lord. I am at the right place at the right time, doing the right thing with the right people. (Psalm 37:23)

These are just a few of the truths of who we are in Christ. Let these words fill your mouth so that they root deep into your heart. As you continue to speak God's Word, you will notice that your thoughts will begin to change, and the outward circumstances will change into the words you have been speaking in faith.

Remember, we love you, and we are praying for you.

Blessings,

Chloe
